It was criticised by Nicolas Boulenguez in https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2012/09/msg00083.html and finally the previous approach has shown the flaw that it is not possible to delete a file from packaging root dir but leaving a file with the very same name in a subdirectory. To handle this problem the proposed patch from Nicolas was applied here.
